Lady Saints Battle For Fifth

The spot for fifth in District 3-AAA was on the line as Berks Catholic battled Palmyra at Garden Spot High School. Rallying after their strong win over West York, the Lady Saints looked to take the fifth-spot with a win over the Lady Cougars in New Holland.

After 1, Palmyra’s Kristen Smoluk, Maria Tukis and Kathryn McClellan led the Lady Cougars to a 15-14 lead over the Lady Saints. Katrina Belatgek’s two consecutive three-pointers kept Berks Catholic in the hunt.

However, the Lady Saints collapsed in the second quarter, scoring just eight points against Palmyra’s 16. Berks Catholic’s Devon Merritt began her surge late in the second, striking with 4 points in the quarter. At halftime, the Lady Cougars lead over Berks Catholic, 31-22.

The Lady Saints showed some improvement in the third quarter with 12 points over Palmyra’s 11. Merritt struck big in the quarter, shooting 10 of the Lady Saints 12. However, Palmyra continued to lead, 42-34.

The Lady Cougars 8 point lead going into the fourth quarter proved too much for the Lady Saints. After 4, Palmyra took Berks Catholic with a 59-47 win. Smoluk led the Cougars with 19 points; meanwhile, Merritt cashed in for 25 points against Palmyra.
