In a clash of two of Berks County’s preseason lacrosse favorites, Wilson welcomed Wyomissing to Bulldog Field on Thursday evening. Both teams were coming off lopsided victories, Wilson having won their opener 16-0 over Twin Valley, and Wyomissing having topped Saucon Valley 15-7. The matchup featured the top 3 goal scorers from a year ago: Wilson’s Connor Howell and Matt Close, as well as Wyomissing’s Scotty McAvoy.
It did not take long for the Bulldogs to get on the board. Both Mitchell Phillips and Matt Close were able to score early and often, as they led Wilson to a 6-0 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Sam Turner and Bryan Weber get the visiting Spartans on the scoreboard, but they still trailed 7-2 after a Matt Close goal just before the half.
Connor Howell, who had been held scoreless in the first half, managed to score 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of the third quarter, putting Wilson on top 9-2.
Wilson would take a 12-2 lead late in the game after goals by Mitchell Phillips and Jac Cosgrove. Wyomissing’s Bryan Weber would answer with 2 goals in the final 1:30 to boost the Spartans, but it was not enough as Wilson earned a 12-4 victory.
Wilson was led by Mitch Phillips with 5 goals and Matt Close with 3.
Wyomissing got a 3 goal effort out of Bryan Weber.
The Bulldogs will next be in action Saturday morning against Parkland, while the Spartans play at Exeter Friday evening.
