The Wilson Bulldogs (24-3) met William Penn (20-6) tonight in District III-AAAA quarterfinals at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. There, under a coaching staff directed by Troy Sowers, William Penn rolled past the No. 1 seed Bulldogs with a 53-47 win.
Wilson held a demanding 18-11 lead over William Penn at the end of the first quarter. The Bearcats failed to cash in on scoring opportunities, allowing the Bulldogs to take control. Wilson’s Travaun Coad traveled coast-to-coast during numerous first quarter offensive drives and Sam Smith cashed in on a late three-pointer.
Wilson continued to outplay William Penn during the second quarter. However, strong defensive pressure from the Bearcats and big turnovers kept Wilson to just 8 points. At the Giant Center with the first half drawing to a close, Wilson lead William Penn, 26-22.
Out of the locker room, William Penn surged, drawing to within 4 points of Wilson’s lead. After three, it was Wilson up 39-35 over the Bearcats.
William Penn outscored Wilson during the fourth, 18-8. The Bearscats’ late rally proved too much for the No. 1 Bulldogs. Wilson fell 47-53 over William Penn in District III-AAAA quarterfinals hoops. Coad led the Bulldogs with 26 points.
With tonight’s loss, Wilson meets Reading on Tuesday for the fourth time during this 2013-14 season.
