Despite the fact that the holidays are yet to pass, we were treated to a game Thursday night that could potentially go a long way in deciding a Berks II champion for girls basketball.
Both Berks Catholic and Fleetwood entered Thursday’s contest with perfect (4-0, 1-0) records.
The Lady Saints jumped out to an early lead but held just a one point advantage 16-15 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The Lady Tigers used a very strong second quarter to put themselves ahead 33-28 at the half, led in large part by the efforts of Isabella Mullen and Lauren Lister, who each had 13 points in the first half.
However, the Lady Saints came out swinging in the second half and outscored Fleetwood 16-8 in the third quarter to regain the lead 44-41 after three.
The Saints were ultimately able to pull away late in the fourth quarter, as Katrina Balatgek made her fifth three-point field goal of the game, then followed it up by going 4-4 from the foul line in the final minute. When the final buzzer sounded, the Saints earned a 54-48 victory.
The Saints were led in scoring by Katrina Balatgek, who scored 19 points, as well as Courtney Wensel, who added 14. Devon Merritt finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers were paced by Isabella Mullen, who finished with 15 points, as well as Lauren Lister, who finished with 13. Kendra Bamberger added 9 points and 9 rebounds.
The Saints (5-0, 2-0) will next face York Catholic on Saturday on the road. The Tigers (4-1, 1-1) will square off with Exeter (5-0, 1-0) on January 3.
