Just two weeks ago, the Schuylkill Valley Panthers put an end to a few of Wyomissing’s streaks. The Spartans had won 17 consecutive Section 2 contests, but also had defeated the Panthers 13 times in a row.
The Panthers win over Wyomissing set the table for a rematch in the first round of the District 3 AA playoffs.
The Spartans came into the contest 5-5 overall, with a 4-2 record in Section 2, while the Panthers posted a 7-3 overall mark, with a 3-3 Section 2 record.
There was one noticeable addition to the Spartans offense, senior running back Scotty McAvoy returned in week 10 against Berks Catholic and was looking to make his mark in the District playoffs.
McAvoy certainly made his presence felt on the field Friday night in Leesport, as he carried 12 times for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns. Joining McAvoy in the backfield was junior playmaker Thomas Paolini, who ran 12 times for 139 yards and 3 touchdowns. Paolini also picked up two two-point conversions on the night.
The Panthers held a 35-27 lead over the Spartans with just under 3 minutes to play.
However, after an 8 yard Thomas Paolini touchdown run and failed two point conversion pass by McAvoy which was intercepted by Conner Sausser, the Spartans trailed 35-33.
Dan Faust then executed a perfect onside kick, giving the Spartans the ball around midfield with under 2:30 left in the fourth quarter.
About a minute later, Scotty McAvoy found the end zone for the third time. After a Paolini two-point conversion, the Spartans led 41-35. That score would hold final.
The Panthers got 167 yards and 3 touchdowns out of their star running back Nick Scheidt. Fullback Ed Shuttleworth picked up 43 yards and 2 touchdowns for Schuylkill Valley.
The Panthers finish the season with a 7-4 overall record.
Meanwhile, the Spartans (6-5) will travel to top seeded Littlestown (10-0) next week. One thing can be for certain: never doubt Wolfrum teams come playoff time. If the Spartans are able to beat Littlestown and Berks Catholic beats Bermudian Springs, it would set up a Backyard Brawl round 2. Something I think we all would like to see.
