The Governor Mifflin Mustangs have had a 7 week run that would impress any high school football program. Finishing 7-0 in Section 1 has earned the Mustangs another Berks County championship. Central Dauphin East will head to Shillington this Friday to try end their streak of seven straight wins.
Mifflin has been enjoying strong defensive play over the last two months. In fact, the Mustangs have held their opponents to 124 total points in 2013. The Mustangs strong secondary has been the backbone of their impressive defense. Evan Pollock and Aric Dupell have been the clear ring leaders for the Section 1 champs. They will need to be focused and ready to shut down Panthers star RB Chase Edmonds, who has rushed for 1853 yards and 20 touchdowns, while also catching a team high 21 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns. Having totaled 2075 yards of offense, Edmonds is among the best backs in Pennsylvania.
On the offensive end, Coach Vecchio and the gang will be sure to the run football. They have over 2445 rushing yards on the season. The junior duo of QB Jan Johnson and RB Wilson Fontanez has been the major spark in the Mifflin ground game.
The Panthers are coming off a tough 17-14 loss to rival Central Dauphin. However, Mifflin is facing an opponent who has definitely been tested this year. CD East has faced off against state powers such as Coatesville, Cumberland Valley and Harrisburg High School.
I am taking Mifflin in this one. I am sure this game will be won in the trenches. I expect Mifflin to take care of business with the home field advantage and move on to the next round.
Prediction: Gov. Mifflin 23, CD East 20
