The Muhls will begin their run in the District 3 AAA playoffs by hosting the Shippensburg Greyhounds on Friday night in Laureldale.
Muhlenberg will enter the contest with a record of 7-3 overall, including a 4-3 mark in Berks Section 1, while the visiting Greyhounds posted an 8-2 record and won the Mid-Penn-Colonial Conference with an undefeated 7-0 mark.
The Greyhounds are led by RB William Burt who compiled 1142 yards rushing on the season with 11 touchdowns. Joining Burt in the backfield is Dylan Herb, who ran for 597 yards and 8 touchdowns. QB Seth Frey will be looking to find top receiver Storm Fridinger who caught 20 passes for 404 yards and 6 touchdowns during the regular season.
The Greyhounds have won 8 consecutive games and have not allowed more than 16 points in any of the last 7. On the season, the Greyhounds are averaging 26.9 points per game, while allowing just 12.8.
For the home Muhls, the game plan should feature a heavy dose of senior RB Ben Ortiz. Ortiz. Ortiz has run for 1383 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year. In fact, Ortiz has run for at least 94 yards in every game this season for Muhlenberg. The Muhls will also need to get the ball into the hands of arguably their best two-way player, Eli Quinter. Quinter has caught 29 passes for 487 yards and 5 touchdowns on the season. He also has run 7 times for 57 yards and intercepted 4 passes.
The Muhls have posted 3 shutouts defensively this season and are allowing opponents just 12.5 points per game, while scoring 27.7.
This will be a very tough contest for both teams, but do not doubt the Muhls. Last week Ben Ortiz did his best to re-assert himself as one of Berks County’s best running backs. Expect more of the same this week.
Prediction: Muhlenberg 23, Shippensburg 21
