Girls Basketball Preview: Berks I

Wilson

Last Season’s Record: 27-3 (10-0 in Berks I); Lost to North Penn in 2nd round of PIAA AAAA playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Carley Brew (Sr., 10.7 PPG) and Avery Marz (Sr., 10.7 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Ivory Bailey (Sr., 9.1 PPG), Jessie Wallace (Sr., 9.0 PPG), Mikayla Lea (Jr., 4.6 PPG)

Player to Watch: Jessie Wallace had a great year last year for the Bulldogs after transferring from Muhlenberg.  Wallace will be the low post presence that the Bulldogs need if they hope to make a deep playoff run.

Reading High

Last Season’s Record: 16-8 (7-3 in Berks I); Lost to Cumberland Valley in 2nd round of District 3 AAAA playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Imani Bryant (Jr., 7.7 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Cassandra Noray (Sr., 3.2 PPG), Zolanda Legister (Sr., 3.7 PPG), Aisha Hall (Soph., 3.0 PPG)

Player to Watch: Imani Bryant was third on the team in scoring last winter.  She will now become the focal point of the Red Knights offense after Isis Thorpe and Jaylin Stern graduated.

Governor Mifflin

Last Season’s Record: 14-11 (6-4 in Berks I); Lost to Dover in District 3 playoffs

Top Returning Scorer: Madison Koehler (Soph., 8.1 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Kylie Herman (Soph., 5.8 PPG), Jonica Brown (Sr., 5.4 PPG), Melissa Martin (Soph., 3.2 PPG)

Player to Watch: Madison Koehler was second on the team in scoring last season as a freshman. She will now become the number one option for the Mustangs offensively.  Koehler was among the top 3 point shooters in the county last year (31).

Muhlenberg

Last Season’s Record: 9-13 (4-6 in Berks I); No Playoffs

Top Returning Scorer: Angel Nieves (Jr., 9.1 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Elizabeth Christman (Sr., 4.7 PPG), Karis Pennington (Sr., 3.6 PPG), Hailee Painter (Soph., 3.5 PPG)

Player to Watch: Hailee Painter averaged 3.5 points per game as a freshman last season.  Expect her to get more playing time this winter and become one of the focal points of the Lady Muhls offense.

Daniel Boone

Last Season’s Record: 6-17 (3-7 in Berks I)

Top Returning Scorer: Stephanie Sievers (Jr., 9.1 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Shelby Vanderslice (Jr., 8.5 PPG), Dahlia Wilson (Jr., 6.4 PPG), Alayna Roesener (Soph., 2.5 PPG)

Player to Watch: Shelby Vanderslice is one of the best second scoring options in the county.  When combined with the efforts of Stephanie Sievers, the Lady Blazers have a great one two punch.

Exeter

Last Season’s Record: 5-17 (0-10 in Berks I)

Top Returning Scorer: Jennifer Eck (Jr., 9.4 PPG)

Projected Key Contributors: Sara Wesler (Jr., 8.9 PPG), Kayte Johnson (Sr., 4.6 PPG), Alison Snyder (Soph., 3.8 PPG)

Player to Watch: Sara Wesler will look to establish herself as one of the top centers in the league, building upon a solid sophomore season last year.
