Boys Basketball Preview: Berks II

Berks Catholic

Last Season’s Record: 26-4 (10-0 in Berks II); Won Berks Championship; Lost to Archbishop Carroll in first round of PIAA Class AAA Tournament.

Top Returning Scorer: Nana Foulland (Sr., 14.0 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Chris Warren (Sr., 11.8 PPG); Connor Jack (Jr., 10.9 PPG); Cooper Kutz (Sr., 4.5 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Connor Jack averaged just less than 11 points per game last winter as a sophomore.  Look for him to step it up even more during his junior season. Jack and Foulland might be the best 4-5 combo in the county.

Conrad Weiser

Last Season’s Record: 11-12 (8-2 in Berks II); Lost to Berks Catholic in Berks Quarterfinals.

Top Returning Scorer: Andy Orr (Sr., 10.2 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Dexter Jordan (Sr., 7.5 PPG); Cartier Talford (Jr., 5.4 PPG); Aidan Brosious (Sr., 3.2 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Cartier Talford made the most of his opportunities when presented with them a year ago.  He averaged 5.4 points last season as a sophomore and finished second on the team in 3-pointers. Playing starter’s minutes, his numbers should improve significantly.

Schuylkill Valley

Last Season’s Record: 10-12 (5-5 in Berks II); No playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Frank Melvin (Jr., 2.5 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Matthew Ciniewicz (Sr., 1.6 PPG); Conner Sausser (Sr., 1.5 PPG); Austin Cernakowski (Sr., 1.4 PPG).

Player to Watch: Conner Sausser made more 3-point shots than any other returning player for Schuylkill Valley.  The Panthers graduated their top five scorers, so they will need to desperately find help and Sausser may be the guy. In what looks to be a rebuilding year, Sausser will get the opportunities to shine on the perimeter.

Twin Valley

Last Season’s Record: 5-16 (4-6 in Berks II); No playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Kurt Wrangler (Sr., 4.5 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Daniel Larson (Sr., 1.7 PPG); Gabe Witmer (Soph., 1.5 PPG); Remzie Akkad (Jr., 1.1 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Kurt Wrangler appeared in just 11 games last season.  If he gets a chance to play in a full load of games, expect him to have an impact on the Raiders. The younger brother of Kyle, Kurt should be a force in the paint and on the defensive glass.

Fleetwood

Last Season’s Record:  8-13 (3-7 in Berks II); No playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Clay Weidemoyer (Sr., 9.0 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Kyle Flannery (Sr., 8.1 PPG); Brian Schumaker (Sr., 6.3 PPG); Jared Reaser (Jr., 5.9 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Jared Reaser scored 100 points as a sophomore last season. Look for the Tigers to make a run for a Berks playoff berth this year with Reaser a key contributor in a balanced scoring attack.

Hamburg

Last Season’s Record: 3-19 (0-10 in Berks II); No playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer:  Josh Kisha (Sr., 8.8 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Partick Barter (Sr., 8.1 PPG); Eric Peacock (Jr., 3.4 PPG); Nicholas Schlottman (Jr., 2.4 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Josh Kisha hit 31 3-pointers last winter in just 21 games.  He will need to be the Hawks go-to scorer this season as they look to improve. Kisha will also provide a post presence the Hawks desperately seek.
