Boys Basketball Preview: Berks I

Reading High

Last Season’s Record:  15-15 (8-2 in Berks I); Lost to Berks Catholic in Berks Final; Lost to Martin Luther King Jr. in First Round of PIAA Class AAAA Tournament.

Top Returning Scorer: Meme Burdine (Sr., 12.6 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Gilberto Benz (Sr., 11.6 PPG); Isael Abreu (Sr., 5.3 PPG); Sterling Young-Trapp (Jr., 1.4 PPG).

Player to Watch:  Meme Burdine led the Red Knights in both scoring and 3-pointers made last season.  Burdine will need to keep up his rapid scoring pace if he hopes to help the Red Knights retain the Berks I title. The free throw line will be key for the senior, who shot 83 percent from the charity stripe last season.

Wilson

Last Season’s Record: 32-9 (7-3 in Berks I); Lost to Berks Catholic in Berks Semifinals; Lost to Great Valley in First Round of PIAA Class AAAA Tournament

Top Returning Scorer: Travaun Coad (Sr., 13.8 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Matt Timochenko (Sr., 8.9 PPG); Jaylin Calloway (Sr., 4.7 PPG).

Player to Watch: Matt Timochenko was the Bulldogs second leading scorer last season as a junior.  Assuming he doesn’t take the season off to focus on football, Timochenko will be an excellent second scoring option on a senior-led team.

Exeter

Last Season’s Record: 18-6 (6-4 in Berks I); Lost to Wilson in Berks Quarterfinals; Lost to Carlisle in First Round of District 3-AAAA Tournament.

Top Returning Scorer: Brett Gilbert (Sr., 5.2 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Michal Menet (So., 1.9 PPG); Taylor Trojanowski (Jr., 1.8 PPG).

Player to Watch: Michal Menet saw decent playing time as a freshman a year ago.  At 6’5”, Menet may be the big man that the Eagles need. He will be relied upon in the post for a team that lost its entire starting five to graduation.

Daniel Boone

Last Season’s Record: 10-13 (5-5 in Berks 1); Lost to Wyomissing in Berks Quarterfinals.

Top Returning Scorer: Kenny Worthington (Sr., 11.8 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Daniel Downs (Sr., 7.4 PPG); Steven Sievers (Sr., 5.7 PPG); Stephon Williams (Sr., 4.7 PPG); Xavier Smith (Sr., 2.1 PPG).

Player to Watch: Daniel Downs averaged 7.4 points per game as a junior last season, which is second best among returning players in the section. Downs gives the Blazers a low-post presence to complement Worthington.

Muhlenberg

Last Season’s Record: 9-13 (3-7 in Berks I); No Playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Jalen Flynn (Sr., 11.7 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Nelson Hine (Sr., 11.0 PPG); Leonardo Giraldi (Sr., 5.8 PPG).

Player to Watch: Nelson Hine averaged 11 points per game during his junior season and is poised to have a strong senior campaign. Most teams in a tough section need a strong second scorer. Hine provides that.

Gov. Mifflin

Last Season’s Record: 6-16 (1-9 in Berks I); No Playoffs.

Top Returning Scorer: Reid Hoff (Jr., 11.6 PPG)

Projected key contributors for 2013-14: Austin Peters (Sr., 8.3 PPG); Trystan Ovid (Jr., 6.0 PPG for Muhlenberg), Jason Quigley (Sr., 4.2 PPG); .

Player to Watch: Reid Hoff averaged 11.6 PPG last season as a sophomore and will be the featured offensive player for the Mustangs this season. His size, speed, and shooting abilities will make it difficult for opponents this year. Hoff can play guard, forward and center; making him one of the most versatile players in the county.
