In one of our BerksIC.com Co-Games of the Week, we will be treated to a matchup of BFL Section 2 powers. The Panthers of Schuylkill Valley (1-1, 4-1) will travel to Berks Catholic (1-0, 5-0).
The visiting Panthers need a bounce-back win in the worst way following a 31-7 loss against Fleetwood. Schuylkill Valley began the season 4-0 and looked destined to be in the discussion for Section 2’s best team. However, they will face a tough task with Berks Catholic if they hope to reassert themselves.
The Panthers have been led by RB Nick Scheidt and FB Ed Shuttleworth on the ground. The tandem has combined for 1,113 yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, QB Tanner White has had success at times finding his favorite target Tanner Mish, who has 15 catches for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season.
Defensively, the Panthers are led by Nick Scheidt at linebacker and Gregory Johnson in the secondary, both of whom have intercepted 4 passes this season. Though Berks Catholic prefers to keep the ball on the ground, Scheidt and Johnson will need to make the most of their opportunities to force turnovers whenever the ball is airborne.
For the home Saints, they will need to stick to the game plan that has made them so successful to this point. Berks Catholic features two quarterbacks and several running backs. Junior Pop Lacey and senior Chris Warren have led the Saints with 327 yards and 319 yards rushing, respectively. Warren is also the top receiver for the Saints, hauling in 6 passes for 125 yards. Warren has a team best 9 touchdowns, putting him among a group of four Saints with at least 4 touchdowns (Lacey, Todd Reedy, Cooper Kutz).
The Saints defense has been the best in BFL Section 2 thus far. They have allowed just 58 points on the year, forcing 12 turnovers along the way. The Saints have scored 3 defensive touchdowns on the year and forced a safety as well. The Saints defensive line has been led by senior Pietro Gaspari (17 tackles, 5 sacks) and junior Tynan DeShields (17 tackles, 3 sacks). Eric Fellin and Isaac Lutz have forced a combined 4 fumbles for the Saints defense. Also, last week the Saints got junior linebacker Matt Reinhart back from injury. Reinhart intercepted a pass in his first game back.
It will not be an easy task, but if anyone has the ability to shut down Nick Scheidt along with the Panthers strong offense, it’s Berks Catholic.
Prediction: Berks Catholic 34, Schuylkill Valley 23
