BIC Sports Co-Game of the Week: Muhlenberg at Mifflin

The top two teams in Berks Football League Section 1 will square off Friday in Shillington.  We at BerksIC.com have selected this, along with Schuylkill Valley at Berks Catholic, as our Co-Game of the Week.

When Mifflin takes the field, the Mustangs will look to build their resume with a win over an unbeaten Muhlenberg team.  The Mustangs got off to a slow start, but have rebounded nicely, allowing just 7 points in their last two games, both wins.  Despite blowout losses to Wilson and Cocalico, Mifflin can boast a positive number in the point differential, thanks in large part to a strong defensive effort lately.  The Mustangs have reasserted themselves as one of the top dogs in Section 1, and can go a long way in reclaiming their throne at the top.

In order to be successful against a strong Muhlenberg defense, the Mustangs will need to get big offensive contributions from Jan Johnson, Aric Dupell, and Wilson Fontanez.  Any additional contributions from the likes of Jonas Fiant and Reid Hoff will simply be an added bonus for the home team.  Defensively, the Mustangs will be reliant on their secondary, led by Bret Chambers, as well as their front seven, led by Darren Schlegel and Connor Morehart.

For the visiting Muhls, they will need to play disciplined and avoid any unnecessary penalties if they hope to pull off the win.  The Muhls have a great competitive balance that features a very potent offense, as well as a defense that has allowed a county low 38 points through 5 games.

Offensively, the Muhls will need to continue to see the connection between Antonieo Dominguez and Eli Quinter.  This duo has emerged as the best throw-and-catch tandem in Section 1.  The Muhls will also need a strong ground game from Ben Ortiz.

Defensively, the Muhls have been nothing short of incredible thus far.  They have seen DE/LB Dakota Thompson and LBs Brock Stoudt and Daryll Ellison play great up front.  The Muhls secondary has also been great, led by Eli Quinter and Quindon Stinson.  It will take a team effort for the Muhls to contain the Mustangs option attack.

Prediction: Gov. Mifflin 21, Muhlenberg 20
