Big Plays Spring Wyomissing to Week One Win

There were many new faces on the field for the defending state champs on Saturday afternoon, but the outcome had a familiar feel for the Spartan faithful.

Using big plays and key defensive stands, the 2012 Section 2 champs easily handled Schuylkill Haven 29-15 at Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium.

Providing the early spark was junior halfback Thomas Paolini, who had two touchdowns on the afternoon. One was a 90-yard reception from junior quarterback Scott Kuczala. That play now ranks third all-time in Wyomissing passing history. Kuczala finished 4-for-7 with 176 yards and two touchdowns.

Paolini finished the day with over 200 all-purpose yards, including 107 through the air and another 92 on the ground. Kuczala also found Paolini twice for two point conversions.

The junior wasn’t the only Spartan contributing, senior split back Sean Smith also had a 49 yard touchdown reception.

Defensively, the Spartans were led by Cody Cox and Logan Jones on the front line. Wyomissing also got contributions from sophomore Brandon Workman, who recorded the team’s only sack. Senior Bryan Weber returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter putting the game out of reach.

Although they had the game in hand for most of the afternoon, the Spartans did allow 244 yards on the ground.

Next week, Wyomissing will travel to Robesonia to take on Conrad Weiser in the BIC Sports (www.berksic.com) game of the week.
