When the season begins on August 30th, the Conrad Weiser Scouts will have to face the daunting task of replacing star running back Angel Cruz.
Cruz rushed for 1,886 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, which was good enough to earn him a chance to play at nearby Kutztown University.
Luckily for head coach Alan Moyer, the Scouts will return their second leading rusher Alex Guilbe, who will be looking to have a breakout junior year. Guilbe rushed for 346 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2012. He also served as the team’s primary kick and punt returner.
Several questions still remain about the quarterback position for Weiser as well. There will likely be a competition between seniors Ben Harakel and Jonathan Bower. Junior Ben Benjamin will also get a long look when camp opens up in August.
The strength of Conrad Weiser will be its offensive line which returns All-Berks center Branden Wolfskill along with seniors Nash Grego, Malik Shivers, and Brandon Naveiro. Recently, the four competed in the New Oxford High School Lineman Challenge, which saw them finish second out of 43 teams.
While questions may remain at the offensive skill positions, this offensive line is undoubtedly one of the best the area has seen in a long time and should help to ease the lesser experienced players into their roles.
The Scouts return key contributors on defense from the year prior. Senior defensive star Malik Shivers recorded 68 tackles and 5 sacks last season, which led the team in both categories.
Senior hybrid Aaron Sadowski is poised to contribute following a season that saw him record 64 tackles, which was good for second on the team.
The secondary will be anchored by senior Dexter Jordan, who led the team with six interceptions during the 2012 campaign.
With key returning players on both sides of the ball, the Scouts should be highly competitive this year and could potentially win the Section 1 crown.
