Kutztown’s Andrew Gernert, Governor Mifflin’s Niko Hulsizer and Wilson’s Andy Ravel were named first team representatives on the PIAA All-State team this week.
Gernert, the Berks player of the year, was voted to the Class AA team by the coaches association. He batted .440 with 18 RBIs and 28 runs scored for the Cougars. The senior also went 7-4 with an ERA of 0.86 on the mound. He struck out 93 batters in 81 innings.
Hulsizer and Ravel were on the Class AAAA team. Hulsizer, a sophomore, hit .446 with three home runs, eight steals, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored for the Mustangs. Ravel, a Kent State commit, went 7-1 with a 1.04 ERA and struck out 76 batters in 60 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs. Both were All-Berks selections.
Three Exeter seniors were named to the Class AAAA second team: Ben Bortz, Alex Dundore and Derian Sarlat. Bortz threw four complete games for the Eagles with a 7-2 record and 1.50 ERA. He also hit .354 with 20 RBIs. Dundore batted .371 with 25 RBIs and converted 11-of-11 stolen base attempts. Sarlat scored 24 runs and hit .390, which led Exeter. The Eagles finished second in District 3-AAAA with a 17-9 record.
Oley Valley’s Nick Distasio and Garrett Pelko made the second team in Class AAA. Distasio, a junior, hit .425 with 22 RBIs and 25 runs scored. He also anchored Oley’s pitching staff with a 9-2 record and 1.50 ERA. Pelko went 7-1 with a 2.08 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings. Both helped the Lynx win the Berks title for the first time since 1985.
