Coach Mick Vecchio and the Governor Mifflin Mustangs enjoyed a very good 2012 season. The team lost their first two games and recovered mightily when divisional play began. The Mustangs, led by then sophomore QB and all-around playmaker Jan Johnson, as well as their backfield seniors Ryan Barbon and Thomas DePaul finished a perfect 7-0 in Section 1 before reaching the district playoffs. After defeating both South Western and Penn Manor in the opening two rounds of the District 3-AAAA playoffs, the Mustangs fell to crosstown rival Wilson for the second time. However, the Mustangs fared much better the second time around as they fell by only a touchdown, 21-14.
The Mustangs will open the 2013 season at home against Wilson and they will be hungry for revenge against the team that ended their season a year earlier. The team returns Johnson at the QB position and it appears that junior Aric Dupell and senior Jonas Fiant will get the bulk of the carries on offense this season. They also will seemingly play a large role defensively for the Mustangs as they make up part of the LB corps. Also returning on both sides of the ball is standout interior lineman Conner Morehart. Morehart has committed to play for Temple University. Overall, this year’s Gov. Mifflin team looks poised to contend for another Section 1 title. Anything less will not satisfy Coach Vecchio.
